Most parents are very conscientious when it comes to ensuring that their home is kept safe for children. The addition of simple plastic latches on household cleaning supply cupboards and cabinets, electrical outlet covers and doorknob covers are all common inclusions in houses with small children. Unfortunately, many parents overlook another dangerous area in their home.

Where you store tools is an area that is filled with seemingly harmless inanimate objects, but they can become dangerous in the young hands. Simple tools like hammers, saws and drills should be locked in a centralized area to avoid children hazardously accessing them. The whole story can be found at http://cleanhomehealthyhome.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/child-proofing-a-kitchen/ Tool safety is something that can be easily taught to children under direct supervision, but their curious minds may seek to investigate further if the tools are left unsecured. By locating the tools in a centralized and locked location, parents are able to make sure that all the tools are safely accounted for.

Centralizing your tool storage in a tool cabinet or closet also builds an early tool-safety habit that will remain beneficial as a child grows older. Toddlers and small children may not readily distinguish between their toys and dangerous tools, which is why many parents lock tool areas.

For a parent there is not a thought in the world that is more terrifying than that of your child becoming seriously injured. Fortunately there are many commercially available products that will help us ensure that dangerous knives stay out of the hands of our little ones.

While marketing departments of various manufacturers will claim that their locks are “child proof,” we as parents know that the ambitious child may be able to disprove this claim. Careful consideration will have to be given when choosing which type of lock is right for your family.

One common type is the internal safety latch. When properly installed they allow the drawer to only be opened about an inch and then an adult can apply enough pressure to press down on the clip inside the drawer and allow it to open. While this is often effective for small children it can occasionally be opened by the older child.

Another common safety measure is the magnet key lock. You must place a provided magnet on the proper place outside the door to release the interior latch. This is a nice choice that remains completely hidden when the drawer is shut and also prevents pinched fingers. One drawback is the necessity to always know the location of the magnet if you want your drawer to open.

For the parent of the serious safe-cracker there may be no other choice than to install a traditional key lock. While it is the most unsightly option it will certainly provide the most security. Remember the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Once children are mobile, around 9 months of age, it is essential that your home is child-proofed. This included making sure heavy furniture is secured to the wall, toxic chemicals and medicines are locked away and electrical outlets are covered.

Electrical outlets are often overlooked when child-proofing a home. Due to their frequency of use, parents forget that these outlets pose a major risk to curious crawlers and toddlers. By implementing plug covers, parents can greatly reduce the risk that children will put the finger, or other object, into an outlet.

Child-proofing electrical outlets is as easy as purchasing a plug or cover. The most efficient and effective method is the electrical plug. It works just like a standard electrical plug, but since it is manufactured in plastic, the plug will not carry a charge. By placing the plugs in the outlets, the child is not able to access the electrical outlet. It is a great way to keep your children safe while still being able to access the outlet should the need arise.

The importance of child-proofing the home can not be overstated enough. Children die or are seriously injured every year from homes that are not safe. By taking a few moments to evaluate your home, you will be ensuring that it is safe for your little one. What’s 1 more click?

If you have young children, drawer locks are a very important safety feature all parents should have in their home. Think about what you have stored in your drawers. They probably contain silverware, knives, and cleaning supplies. Think about that junk drawer. What’s in there? It’s probably full of scissors, tools, and small items that the child could choke on. Another hazard is if the child were to pull the entire drawer out of the cabinet and onto themselves. All these things could cause severe injury and harm to the child. Injuries can be prevented with a simple child-safe drawer stop. There are several different styles out there to fit your needs. Some of them require drilling, others do not. Get what works best for you. These safety items can be found at large discount stores, baby stores and hardware stores. They are relatively inexpensive also. When you notice that your child is about to be mobile, it is time to install these safety features. Also, if your child is scooting around in a walker, remember that they may be able to get into the drawers too. Don’t wait until your child injures themselves. It is an inexpensive and easy solution to keep your child safe.Related Article : Child Proofing a Kitchen
